It wasn't often that the feared Earl of Millennium was at a loss. Yet here he was, sat in his usual armchair trying to ignore the discussions of his family whilst recalling the night's events.
How exactly had you appeared on their doorstep? Clearly your mother knew of their location... But how? And who was she? He couldn't understand how he didn't remember. He only used women for certain purposes, so to father a child with one seemed impossible. He longed for a family of his own, for as much as he loved his current one, they weren't the same as having one physically, but he mused long ago women would flee at discovering what he really was, who he really was. Even if a child was made between them, the mother would take them away. So to have one here, within his home... It was mind boggling.
The Earl had checked up on you around ten minutes after you were taken away, ignoring the continuous outcries of his family. You were already out like a light, blankets tucked up to your chin and hair sprayed across the pillow. You were so small, so innocent and fragile, that he couldn't help the tears which stung his eyes. If your mother had willingly left you in the Noah's care, well, he could only imagine what horrors awaited you outside the manor's walls. After all, she had left you in the care of tyrannical monsters. Who exactly was worse than that?
Tears did spring from his eyes when you rolled over, knocking down the blankets to reveal two hand stitched crocodiles in your grasp. The startled gasp he released caused you to stir, so he left you in peace, and also to attempt to compose himself.
He was brought out of his thoughts by a familiar whine.
"Millennie. ~ What are we going to do with her?"
Earl blinked, casting an accusing look over the rim of his spectacles.
"Shouldn't you be in bed, Road? You have school in the morning. ~" She pouted, legs swinging off the armrest.
"But Millennie, this is important!"
"I am aware, but sleep is needed, for all of us." He shot a glance around the now silent room. Protests followed his statement, but were cut off by his raised tone. "We shall discuss this in the morning over breakfast." With that, he left, leaving the family stunned.
The sunlight was barely entering through the window when a loud yawn filled the room, followed by the shuffling of blankets and clothing. A satisfied huff emitted once the shuffling had ceased, and the door opened quickly before being closed with a snap, leaving the room in a content silence once more.
The usually quiet corridor outside the room became filled with light, cheerful humming, which echoed throughout it, reaching the vast staircase, flowing down into the foyer before halting as new sounds emitted from an adjacent door, which a large, strangely decorated room was situated behind. The sounds seemed to represent speech, varying from harsh whispers to eerie baritones. They too halted, however, when the door fully opened, slightly squeaking as it did so.
"Ah, we didn't think you would be up this early. ~" You blinked, glancing towards the source of the strangest voice. It was the man from before, the one who had welcomed you kindly into his home. He was wearing the hat again, only this time a different pretty decoration sat upon it. "Did you sleep well?"
You nodded, looking down at your feet. You didn't like the way the rest of the occupants in the room were staring at you. It almost looked like you were a delicious meal, rather than the food stacked onto the plates before them.
A chair screeched as it went backwards, and darkness covered your feet. You looked up, only to find the hat man kneeling before you. He looked as if he was still standing, given his vast height.
"It's okay. ~" His creaky voice was surprisingly soothing, with a cheery edge to it. "We won't hurt you. ~ Are you hungry?" You nodded, your stomach lightly grumbling. His permanent grin seemed to twitch at the sound. "Come on then. ~"
You happily followed the man, albeit hesitantly, saying thank you quietly when he pulled back a chair for you. You hopped onto it, seeing the plate in front of you covered in an assortment of food.
"We didn't know what you liked, so we put everything together." A new voice spoke up. It belonged to a rugged man with hair reaching his shoulders. He lazily glanced at you as he took a drag from his cigarette. You merely nodded in response.
"That's okay, thank you." Other people at the table seemed to exchange looks at this, before the man who had seen you last night coughed into his fist.
"My Lord, should we begin the introductions?" The hat man nodded at his words.
"Yes yes, of course. ~" He turned his attention to you, trying not to coo as you began eating some of the scrambled egg. "[Name], do you know why you were left here?"
You nodded, swallowing the food slowly. "Mum said she couldn't keep me safe anymore. She said the moo-stuche man was after me." The table exchanged looks once more, although this time it was accompanied by whispers. The hat man, however, merely blinked.
"Moo-stuche?" You nodded. "Do you mean moustache?"
"That's what I said, moo-stuche." You huffed, eating some more of the egg. "Mum said moo-stuche man is a bad man, that I'm safer with daddy and his family, so long as they don't make me a skin person, or something else."
"Mum says you take people and make them skin people. You make sad people happy, then they're sad again."
Silence followed your words for a long period, until the hat man spoke up again.
"That... Is true. Well [Name], you can stay." Your eyes lit up, even making Skinn feel slightly emotional.
"I can, really? Daddy doesn't mind?" The man chuckled.
"No, I don't." You gasped.
"Pwetty hat man is daddy?!" He chuckled again, nodding. "Wow, will I be that big someday then?" The atmosphere instantly darkened. Your father faced you, eye twitching.
"... Big?" You nodded, blissfully oblivious to your appending doom.
"Yeah, you're so tall! Will I be that tall?" Everyone breathed a sigh of relief, and he chuckled, rubbing your head affectionately.
"We'll see. ~" You grinned, and he felt his heart skip. "I'm daddy, but my name is Earl of Millennium. And this is your family. ~"
He gestured to everyone around the table, introducing them all. You smiled, thoroughly surprised at the number of them. You never knew you had so many Aunts, Uncles and cousins! Your mother didn't have anyone on her side of the family. It would be nice to have more people to play with.
Breakfast continued happily after that, and although most of the family seemed sceptical about the arrangement, they knew they would have to deal with it. It was the Earl's call after all, and given you were his daughter, he would be harder to deal with than usual.
Once breakfast was completed an assortment of servants cleaned up the mess, which fascinated you. Given the size of the house and all the staff, your daddy much have been wealthy. Your family were all dressed fancy too, and the decorations looked expensive. You realised your life here would be very different here. No more living on barely any food or few clothes, no more packing and unpacking, no more hiding or worries. You did hope mother was alright though, she seemed highly distraught when she left you on the doorstep.
"So [Name]." You peeked up at the Earl, thought process interrupted. "You shall spend your time doing different things with different family members. Given my job, and theirs, we won't always be around, but we'll try. ~" You smiled, nodding slightly.
"That's okay, I can't wait! It sounds fun!" Earl chuckled, grin twitching as he glanced down at you.
Oh yes, it would definitely be fun. ~
